e-bay returns. What can you do if item returned is not what you sold??

Just wondering if e-bay uphold a complaint by a buyer and you are forced to refund payment on an item and accept a return. What happens if the returned item is not in the condition that it was sent out in or has been damaged by the person who bought it.
I sold a ring on e-bay and now the buyer wants to return it. I have a feeling that something has happened to the item and that is the reason for the return.
What can i do if the diamond stone has been removed from the ring and replaced with glass or the buyer has had work done to the ring and it turns out not to have been quality work?
Do i just have to sit here and be screwed over or is there action i can take. Report to police etc...

From the POV of ebay / Paypal there is nothing you can do. Once the item is returned then the buyer will be refunded. YOu can appeal the decision but you will be told to go to the police (who in my experience do not have time or the inclination to investigate) although they 'put it on file'.0

If there was any difference that resulted in a loss to you, then you could take them to the small claims court - though you would have to prove the condition of the item as sent and returned.0
