megane II steering lock mechanism!!

hey guys.

the steering lock mechanism on my megane II has died, ive taken it off and gone to breakers yards but reluctant to sell just the lock and a column is all they will supply to aquire the part needed.

ive rung loads of autolecky's to see if its a serviceable part, but unfortuatly its not something they want to touch, and a common failure to the early type megane 2's 2003-2004 theres a few company's that will remanufacture the part but in their clauses, states, the price quoted above is an estimate for remanufactureing your supplied steering lock unit, if your unit is unrepairable we sill send your unit back in the same condition, we supply remanufactured units and will supply a price upon return, to wich postage and unit assessment costs apply also.

that leaves main dealer as motor factors dont suppy them and is a dealer part. anyone know how much?? before i phone so i can be prepared? i know theres an upgraded version of the steering lock mechanism too wich leads me to believe that geting a old one or remanufactured one may result in the same thing happening again.

  • To be honest, we never did anything with them. Customers didnt really seem bothered about it.

huh? without that steering lock mechanism working it will not start period? i would be bothered about that. theres no bypass around it either its thatham rated immobiliserand alarm on it as standard.

you cant even get the ignition on to plug any fault code reader in to find the cause, i.e wiring or actual unit.

your sure were on the same page your not thinking of the megane mk1.

£360 inc VAT. special order item from renault..

make your you can get the steering mechanism to disengage before removal or you will need the complete steering column as there a single lock bolt running through it its a left hand thread so be wary turn the wrong way and yoll lock it up and fubar the replacement requireing a new column also. what happens is the pin inside the steering lock housing lock the motors arm to the locked position if it jumps a cog or two, then the motor overruns and the thing is practically useless.

ECU fault, causes the FAN to engage constantly untill keycard removed, if this is the case with yours, your going to have to get it to renault for them to sort out. no auto electrcian will touch it because there is a PCB in there that is fragile and the motor is soldered to it break the solder you cant get to the PCB to solder it back on, damage that your not going to get the car started anyway as immobiliser kick in.

its a small part thats way over priced from renault its made by valeo originally, but renault have a superceeded marker on it NOT AN UPGRADE to wich you were told, wich means either the part is made by a superior company, or in house changes to part numbers.
