New combination boiler

Our Potterton boiler has been nothing but trouble since we moved into our house. It was newish at the time and now 11 years old. Think its time to get a new boiler -currently have no heating or hot water. Just called British Gas who refused to give me even a very rough indication of what a boiler might cost. I know every home is different but I only wanted a very approximate cost of a boiler and the installation but they just wouldnt say - just wanted to send a salesman round.
Don't want to spend much as hoping to move house soon but I have no clue - am I looking at £500, £1000, £2000 ?! Has anybody had a new boiler recently and is BG a rip off ? Heard from some they charge over the top.

Nope. Try £4000. An independent, if you can get one, might charge £2000. British Gas were right not to give a telephone quote. What is the point, it would be meaningless. Ask them round to quote, stand your ground, thanks but no thanks.
You do need working heating or it will really hit your house sale prospects. Up to you where you pitch the quality. Get quotes from British Gas (if you feel able to say no) and at least 2 independents and learn from the quotes.0 -
Wow £4000 is not good news. I agree we cant sell the house without working heating but feels like spending ££££ is a waste when we wont get to benefit from the new boiler ! Yes will get several qoutes and see. Thanks.0

obviosly all boilers vary in price, and sometimes, pipes need upgraded, boiler needs moving.
no agents would know this price, and any 'rough price' would set an expectation.Promo codes are never always cheaper..... isnt that right EuropCar?0 -
If your moving soon just get that one fixed or your just wasting money. If you want a new boiler then to give you a rough idea I've just had a viessmann 100 w 35kw boiler 950 pounds, TF1 filter, power flush, chemicals for cleaning/fitting, installation for 1800 pounds.
That boiler is plenty for our 3 bed 1 bathroom house and comes with 5 year warranty parts & labour.
Is your old boiler a combi?
Is it a case of swaping like for like or would it have to be moved ?
Is the location by an external drain ?0 -
BG typically charge 40% more than a local independent GSR RGI-get a couple of quotes.
Do you actually want a combi though? No free lunch, and no free laptop0 -

Any potenetial buyer will want to knock you down on price if they see they will need to fit a new boiler themselves. Probably by more than the cost of just fitting a new boiler as they will have all the hassle as well.
It won't be a waste if you get the cost back in the house sale price2.22kWp Solar PV system installed Oct 2010, Fronius IG20 Inverter, south facing (-5 deg), 30 degree pitch, no shadingEverything will be alright in the end so, if it’s not yet alright, it means it’s not yet the endMFW #4 OPs: 2018 £866.89, 2019 £1322.33, 2020 £1337.07

The trick is to find somebody who is good at repairing; most plumbers are not.0 -
Yes, I know that a new boiler doesn't increase the selling price, that's not what I said, but in my experience having a non-working boiler does reduce the value of the house, because of the expense & hassle for any buyer of having to replace a boiler that isn't working.
If they can get it repaired, fine, I took the OP's comment "has been nothing but trouble since we moved into our house. .........now 11 years old. Think its time to get a new boiler " to imply that it was now beyond economic repair.2.22kWp Solar PV system installed Oct 2010, Fronius IG20 Inverter, south facing (-5 deg), 30 degree pitch, no shadingEverything will be alright in the end so, if it’s not yet alright, it means it’s not yet the endMFW #4 OPs: 2018 £866.89, 2019 £1322.33, 2020 £1337.07

All that is required is that it is working at the time of exchange. The seller is not required to give any guarantee about it's future prospects-or it's past history (unless the buyer specifically asks). No free lunch, and no free laptop0

That's true.
The OP said that they're hoping to move soon, hasn't said that they have exchanged ,or are close to exchanging, contracts.
If they're only just putting it on the market it could be months before they find a buyer and contracts are exchanged.
And if I was considering making an offer on a house I would be asking lots of very specific questions first.2.22kWp Solar PV system installed Oct 2010, Fronius IG20 Inverter, south facing (-5 deg), 30 degree pitch, no shadingEverything will be alright in the end so, if it’s not yet alright, it means it’s not yet the endMFW #4 OPs: 2018 £866.89, 2019 £1322.33, 2020 £1337.07
