How do I make sure my switch doesn't go through before 31 Dec (when current fix ends)

A switch takes 6 weeks so do it now0

Simple as ever. Set the date on the transfer form at 1/1/12.0

Thanks, will do it now0

Hi, planning to transfer from npower to eon as current deal ends on 31st December. I want it to go through as soon a possible as npower will put me on to a high tarriff, yet want to avoid the £40 I will be charged if I leave before end of fix.
Have you actually worked out extra cost of the new tariff for 4 weeks (say) over your new tariff costs? Is it really worth gambling £40? Anyway, if you leave NPower you will likely forfeit any "deferred discount" on your current tariff.
Have you actually discussed maturity options with NPower? If you are "stuck" with unearned "deferred discount" I would be very surprised if there wasn't a competitive NPower option for you to consider.
However if you don't have much "deferred discount" to forfeit probably you are best extracting yourself from Npower, but are you certain your favoured Eon tariff isn't also "deferred discount"?0 -
I'm also with nPower, current deal ending 31st Dec. If I switch then, I lose out on the £100 discount for being on the tariff & paying by monthly DD. I phoned them & asked when that would kick in & was told it appears on the bill after the anniversary - in my case that'd be in March.
That'll mean that I have to stay with them on a dearer tariff during the coldest time of year so that I'm free to switch after receiving the bonus. Can't get my head round whether this would be worth it, or whether to switch soon to get a cheaper deal, but miss out on the £100. Any thoughts?
Just seen post above which has echoes of what I was getting at!0 -
That'll mean that I have to stay with them on a dearer tariff during the coldest time of year so that I'm free to switch after receiving the bonus...
Well, unfortunately, that is the whole point (for the supplier) of "deferred discount"
However I think there is customer confusion between the default maturity option (if that is expensive standard) and your choice of a more competitive NPower tariff. Discuss the options with NPower (having previously checked for alternative NPower tariffs on a comparison website) and make a rational decison.
Be aware that on comparison websites NPower "deferred discount" tariffs already have the discount deducted from the headline price.0 -
... and your choice of a more competitive NPower tariff ...
Yes, but my choice of a more competitive npower tariff would tie me into another deal with them, with penalties for exit before the term end. OK I'd still get the £100, but I'd forfeit the choice of any other provider, not to mention the cashback I'd earn from a switch of supplier.
As I see it, I either switch soon, in order to be on a cheaper tariff (& get cashback) with some other provider as soon after 31st Dec. as possible, thus foreiting the £100, or I stick with npower til March, get the £100, & have a switch sorted to the best competitor ready for as soon after that, & pick up whatever cashback goes with the switch then. Hope that makes sense...0 -
I have had some switches take as little as 3 weeks in the past - so you need to be careful about putting in a switch request too early.0

It is ridiculous you cannot specify a date on these comparions/switching sites.
How did that slip past OFGEM?
At about he same time as large brown envelopes stuffed with cash was given to them I expect.0 -
I've decided to stay with npower, but change to their go fix 8 deal. Anyone know how long this will take if i go through simplyswitch (to get the £100 vouchers that I cannot get if i deal with npower direct).0
