VPN at home - connect while on holiday.

Options
Hi

On my last holiday abroad I signed up to a VPN service enabling me to connect to the internet via a UK based, thus enabling UK only based services such as BBC iplayer it was cheap and quite reliable.

I would prefer to connect via my home network, does anyone know how this can be setup?
Or point me to where I might find help on this?

I have a windows home server and windows 7 pro 64 bit system.
My router is Billion BiPAC 7402NX

Thanks

I know you can use WHS to create a VPN, there are some tutorials on the website We Got Served dot Com but I'm not sure you can route your internet requests via this VPN, I may be wrong though.
  • A lot of Internet routers will have some sort of VPN server on. If yours doesn't you have a few options including:
    1) buying a low end router containing a VPN server. This would allow you to do a remote client VPN like connecting to work but connecting to your home network
    2) using VPn softtware on your home computer. Is is a client client VPN so means you simply connect through your home computer meaning the home computer must remain on while you go away.

I'd recommend the first option depending on the costs of a router that allows you to setup VPN access :)

windows, OS X and linux all have VPN servers built right in, so you don't have to use any 3rd party software.

for windows these 2 links will help you here and here on your router you would need to set up port forwarding to the correct local IP address

I would imagine that windows server should be even easier to set up but I don't know.

obviously your BB upload speed will become your download speed when you are connecting to the VPN.
  • Thanks for the responses

I have ended up going with CCproxy running on my windows 7 PC

works well for remote laptop/pc connection

I have what I thought was a good modem Bipac 4702nx with 3g and VPN
Can't get it to work with iphone/ipad L2TP - PPTP or IPSEC
