Bike derailleur adjustment

Not sure it is the wife's bike I will ask but....
The 'dropout' you're referring to, by the way, is probably the 'hanger'; this is (I think) made of steel and designed to bend or break sacrificially, protecting the dropout itself, which is part of the frame. This (again I think) is necessary on aluminium frames, because you can't bend them back into shape.
Yes that is what I read, to save the frame.
It was an aluminum casting I think, it didn't look machined. Some of the ones I saw advertised where much more precison jobs with CNC milling etc. as you suggest.
I have replaced it like for like. there are over 200 designs for different hangers:eek:
Cassette it is then, if it won't adjust, Iknow you are all probably right I just have to try."If you act like an illiterate man, your learning will never stop... Being uneducated, you have no fear of the future.".....

Just take it to the LBS?
Not very MSE, I have the time and it's interesting;)
The original cassette is a HG30 -8I The original is discontinued according to some stores.
Any idea whether this

is likely to be interchangeable with this in 11 - 34 guise - appears the same to me.

Only thing is the locking tool is different to the one for the HG30;-(

Sorry for the late reply:
I believe all current Shimano 8-speed cassettes are interchangeable and use the same lockring tool; as long as the 'range' of each cassette is similar.
So for example: 11-32 and 11-34 should both be OK.
It's also useful to know that SRAM 8-speed cassettes are also interchangeable with Shimano.
I'm not sure what you mean about the lockring tool being different; it should be the same for the two you've mentioned. For anyone reading this with a seven-speed 'cassette', the picture might be different - most seven-speeds are actually 'freewheels', which look similar but are fitted differently.Long-haul Supporters DFW 120
