Jewellery Insurance for Travelling

Hi

I have a difficult problem which I'm hoping for advice on. I am a British passport holder who has been living in Australia for a year and I am now intending to travel home with my fiance with a 3 month holiday in Asia on the way. Whilst out in Australia we bought an engagement ring (Valued at about 4000 pounds) which we now would like to bring home. There seem to be 2 main options

1. Send it home via courier

This seems possible and also the ring can be insured during transit. However I think I would have to pay VAT and other tax on the ring when it enters the UK (Please correct me on this if I'm wrong). This could work out very expensive.

2. Take it with us travelling

The advantage of this that if my partner wears it on entry to the UK we are very unlikely to be charged VAT on the ring, but we need to insure it whilst backpacking around Asia. I can't find any travel policies that will cover anywhere near this amount. Can you get specific jewellery insurance that will cover overseas. I also have a flat in London that is rented at the moment but contents insurance does not seem to cover belongings overseas for anything more than short holidays.

I would appreciate any advice!

You would need to check with customs on sending the item into the country as I am sure it will depend on what your legal status in Australia has been etc. Most the discussed rules on international postage relate to companies sending items or "gifts", I have never come across posting an item to yourself internationally.
