Who do you think makes the nominations? OK, it's not quite as blatant as the ones you're talking about, but there are some very definite 'camps', let's say.
On a related note, I know a guy who sold his DVD on Amazon with a load of blurb about winning the jury prize at some film festival. He ran the festival (it was an online virtual festival, only one entrant). Technically yes, he won the jury prize of a prestigious-sounding (yet worthless) festival, but you can't take any of this stuff at face value!

Continuing on the tpoic of dubious awards, I am amazed at how many chip shops have signs up such as "Chip Shop of the Year 2009". etc. There seems to be a lot of them about. Can't all be award-winning.0
