Ive just got myself a plasma TV and also bought an AV receiver. Now, ive just realsied that my DVD home theatre system doesnt have an optical output, so basically need someone to recommend a decent DVD player, that has an optical output and also progressive scan. My TV is HD ready, and im not sure whether this makes a difference, although i do not have a HD box.
Im willing to spend up to £150 but would prefer to spend around the £100 mark. Also, dont mind purchasing used/new of Ebay.
Im not suer what i need to look for so your learned comments would be appreciated.
Thanks

You'd want a DVD player that upscales your dvds to near HD quality, it would have a HDMI output which you would need to have on your TV too. I don't have one myself so couldn't recommend a particular one though I believe pansonic make good ones.

Not sure if you require one with all the latest stuff like upscaling. But if you want a very decent player I can highly recommend the Lafayette LFDV971D, DivX DVD player. I got mine from Atlantic Electronics for £39.99 + P&P. Website link is:

This player has good connectivity, is multiregion, has PAL progressive scan. It looks great too. I use the optical output on it and use the RAW sound output setting so my AV unit takes care of the DD and DTS.
The player when it came out retailed for £160 and received good reviews:

Some Ebay sellers sell the 969 version. I recommend going for the above 971 model from Atlantic as they provided great Customer Service. I put a post on the 5 star board on this forum.
My parents have a Panasonic S27 DVD player which got good reviews although I don't like the menu system much.

I dont know much about HD, but how can a DVD player upscale the picture quality? Surely there is only an certain amount of detail on the DVD, so how is it suppose to accurately extrapolate any additional information?"I'm not even supposed to be here today."0 -

As far as I know a DVD actually has a beeter picture quality than required for a standard TV and so outputs a less impressive picture than it is capable of - the upscaling 'unleashes its potential' and put it out through a HDMI cable. However, like I said I haven't got one so couldn't say whether they are any good.
edit: There is a link here explaining upscaling.
