Damage caused by British Gas visit

I have a homecare agreement and had to call out an engineer to change a pump in the loft to do with the central heating system. After he had gone, I noticed a wooden strut which was supporting some pipework which went into the tank had been broken. (it was not broken before). Soon after a pipe into the water tank started dripping and I have had to call them out 3 times to fix the leak which has left water damage on the bedroom ceiling. The last engineer has informed me the pipe is leaking because the tank is not level and the whole thing needs draining and put on a new level base meaning loads of pipework being refitted which will cost about £1000. He said that a wooden strut shouldn't have be used to keep the tank level in the 1st place (it wasn't keeping the tank level, just the pipework in position) so they will not pay even though it was fine until they broke the strut. The whole heating system was fitted before I moved in. Can anyone advise where I stand legally. I can't afford the £1000. He has temporarily fixed it but doesn't think it will last.
Thankyou

I'd point out to them that regardless of how it was arranged beforehand, until their engineer visited and broke said strut, tree were no issues with leaks etc, so from that you have deduced that the engineer has made a working tank fail, so you want them to put you back in the position you were in beforehand, ie without these faults, free of charge.0
