Dogs and out of date meat

Not a regular thing, but I've just realised that the meat I was about to cook had it's use-by date as yesterday. It's extra lean pork mince, not frozen, just opened the packet.

Now, I've seen what our girls eat and about the only thing that didn't stay down was fresh cowpat. So any real problems with me cooking this pork and adding a little to their meals for the next 3 days?

No problems at all. In fact at only a day, I'd eat it myself :)

I'd eat it too and give it to the faithfuls. Same as with people, does it look and smell ok?
    Go for it

There's been the odd incident of parasites that aren't killed by cooking the meat affecting pets who've eaten it raw. I rawfeed my dogs but everything is frozen first. With pork you have the possibility of trichinella spirosis, moreso if it's not British pork (British pigs are tested). As long as you cook it, it should OK though, other than perhaps upsetting their tums if they get too much of something they're not used to.
Personally, I wouldn't worry about using it myself if it was just one day over the best-before and still smelt fine.
  • Id definatley cook it and feed it to my dogs and cats, sometimes I boil up mince with a bit of rice and they love that and it makes ti go a bit further!

Yeah, go for it. A dog's intestines could dissolve a corpse without bother.

I did that myself yesterday with some finest mince :) Id forgotten to use it and it was a few days over. Im sure it would have been ok for us, but it wasnt a nice colour any more. Cooked it for the boys and they loved it - I was quite jealous of them. When you think what they mooch and eat when they are out .......
  • Slight change of topic, but I didn't think dogs were supposed to have pork - I'm not sure why, but you never get "pork" flavoured dog food do you? You get lamb, chicken, beef but I've never seen pork and assumed that there was a reason?

I gave my dog some pork (cooked) on 2 occasions and both times it upset his tum so have avoided it ever since.

Apart from the pork debate, I would give my dog minced beef or lamb that was a day over use by date, so long as it looked and smelt OK. As someone else said, they often get hold of far worse!

    Pigs ears, snouts, trotters?
I think there was a problem years ago but it's been pretty much cleared now, at least British pork.

I think one of the main reasons is because most of the pig is used for human consumption - the less pleasant parts go into cheap sausages. My raw food supplier sources the meat from abbatoirs etc. so in summer, beef can be hard to get hold of as the butchers snap it up for cheap burgers, and he said pork is near impossible to get of. He can get the odd pigs head but no real meaty parts. Whereas with beef, the tougher cuts aren't so popular, chicken wings and legs aren't as popular as breast meat, etc.

We had a Roe calf caught on the fence where it died, took the dog about 6 weeks to finish it off with the foxes and buzzards. He knows within a day or so if there is a corpse within a mile of the house.
