Question about onions

Have volunteered to put in 300 onion sets for a neighbour who has gone on a world cruise. Is there a little symbol for I am jealous?
How deep do I plant them? Is it just push them in and leave the very tip showing? How far apart?
Thanks. I don't want to get it wrong.Thank you for this site :jNow OH and I are both retired, MSE is a Godsend0 -

I don't think onions are too fussy, as long as their bottom is in the soil and they are at least 6-9 ins apart they will be fine... I used to draw 2 or 3 drills(grooves) about 9ins apart then space the onions along the drill, then just drag the stick along the top of the drill so that the soil then falls back into the groove mostly covering the onion set. A little light press of the soil should suffice.. you might need to water them but I wouldn't think so given how damp everything is..#6 of the SKI-ers Club :j

Personally, I would leave it until March before planting them.
You can just push them into the soil as you say, but as the roots start to grow they may push them out again. The alternative is to make individual holes a trowel and plant them. Obviously it is quicker to push them in.
Plant them 4" to 6" apart in rows 12" apart. You can leave the tips showing or bury them just underneath the soil - I have never found that it makes any difference.0 -
How hard/easy is it to grow onions ? I can still remember my dad's fabulous tasting ones from his garden. I saw them (plug plants) on ebay but all seemed to be in lots of 30 or more, I just wanted to try a few for starters. Somebody please talk to me about onions !

I managed to grow them from 'sets' so they must be easy,
But you are a little late for this year.
I remember also stringing them , they looked very impressive.0 -

Onions are dead easy, I sow a few every few weeks and thus have them year round.
It's not too late for this year, but I don't know where you live, but they can overwinter and be ready for early next year.
Why not buy a pack of seeds, bung them into the ground, and leave them alone until ready to harvest. You can get cheap seeds form Wilko and sow as many or few as you want. Plus, you can sow the rest next year without any bother.0
