Boiler playing up

My worcester 28i boiler is playing up. Over the last 12 months it has had 2 repairs (the only 2 ever, since it was new). Anyway, last night we put the heating on and after 30 mins or so the red warning light began flashing (5 flashes/second) meaning appliance fault). We turned off the heating and reset it, today we put it on and exactly the same happened. Any ideas?

  • The i-series and junior models of WB are decidedly less good than the CDI models, and have a number of common faults. The flaws in the design are often exacerbated by poor installs as the i-series is one of the boilers of choice for cheap installers that cut corners.

Does the fault happen with ch or dhw use?
What does the manual say about the causes for rapid flash?
  • Mine has been doing that ( different make though ) and it was becauae of low pressure. Have you checked the pressure and respressurised it ? Might not be that - Im no heating expert but worth a thought.

it only happens with the CH, dhw works fine. The rapid flash is appliance fault, rather than a slow flash which indicates lockout.

The pressure is 1bar when cold rising to 1.9bar before it cuts out. There is a chirping kind of noise coming from the boiler for a short time around the 1.5 bar pressure mark

Dont know, it was repaired this time last year, and again earlier this year, it had a new water pressure part.

thx Ben, thats interesting , my installer wanted to fit a 24i in a 3 bed large semi , for a family of 4 who have 3 showers a day !! yet his quote was still high compared to others who quoted say 28i !!!

Its installers like this that give the rest of you top tradesmen a bad name !!

    Anyway I went elsewhere and I also requested a 30CDi !!

The CDi was a mere £95 more than the 28i !!!

Viessmann 100W1b-35 kW gives you a better boiler for less money.

yes i did consider the Viessmann,

But Viessmann`s previous track record just put me off ( i know they are much better now though, S/S heat exchangers ) against the long standing good track record of worcester, also having had a worcester at my last house , worcester`s customer service was outstanding !!

i beleive Worcester are the only ones who use their own "deidicated" service engineers also , ? please correct me if am wrong though
  • The 100 1a did have some problems, but unlike most other companies, Viessmann did not try to cover it up or deny it.
WB have easily the best after sales/customer service of all, but at a price; the WB of the 35 kW Viessmann is now in excess of £500.
The going opinion in the trade, is that the quality of WB products is going down, although the CDI is still a good boiler imho.
I have been on a Viessmann training for the new 100W, and personally taken one to bits. Even if they were the same price, I'd still have the Viessmann myself rather than the CDI, and I wouldn't entertain any of the other WB boilers.
