Council tax

Hi, we live off the patch in our own home. My fella went away recently. I'm aware there is a Council tax 50% discount. Please can anyone link or bounce me to the info.

I did ask him before he went but he said its something you claim back when he returns?? But his admin is rubbish & he doesnt pay the bills I do!!! So he may of made that up...

Thank you for your help.

On another matter totally, I have tried to register onto some of the army wives type forums but never hear anything again. do they think a yahoo email is dodgy or something? Thanks for your help.

There isn't a 50% discount. A single occupancy discount (if applicable) is 25%. But it would seem in this case that you should claim through the MOD-you'll still need to pay your full CT upfront to the local authority.

I will give you a ring i think as we live in our own house and when asked about this we were told No, My husband is about to be deployed, Am i right in thinking that I am entitled to a reduction, Is this 25% or 50%. Do i pay as normal and claim once my husband gets back or do i claim now, He goes end of the month. Thanks in advance.

Local council should give you a discount as mentioned; as well as you can claim via JPA if it's a qualifying theatre. Your husband can claim the discount on his return via JPA; it will then be paid with his wage (so not really a discount; a rebate perhaps is better?). So don't forget to get both sorted; 1 via council and your husband does via JPA on return.

By the council? Go back to them via letter

For more info it would be better to give Cat a ring as she doesn't moderate this forum so can't directly answer :)

In yesterday's budget it was announced that military personnel serving overseas will receive an increase in their council tax allowance to cover 100% of the national average charges rather than the previous 50%. So a 6 month tour overseas = £592 tax free lump sum on return.
To be clear - this is still not a discount given by your local council who will still bill for the full amount - this is an amount paid to serving personnel by the MoD to cover the cost.
