Money Supermarket search is on my credit report

About 3-4 times in the past 18 months I have used the Money Supermarket "Find and compare credit builder credit cards" tool which is located at http://www.moneysupermarket.com/credit-cards/credit-cards-v2-credit-builder/.

At the top of the page in a pop-up it clearly states: "Use this free and easy-to-use service to find the right cards for you. It takes less than five minutes and it won't affect your profile."

Today I have just obtained my statutory credit report from Callcredit. Despite Money Supermarket's assurances, each and every search that they have carried out is listed on this report.

I have emailed Money Supermarket for an explanation but for now can anyone advise me if these searches will effect my credit rating and if so, can I get them removed from my credit report?

In the mean time, I would suggest that people are very careful when carrying out this type of search.

  • Its a soft search/generic/money laundering/insurance quotation this will not affect your credit report, but still show.

If it was a credit search for a mortgage/credit card/loan/overdraft etc then to many of these can be seen as negative and desperate by lenders.
Can I find out my credit score?
You do not have a single credit score or rating. Different organisations take different information into account when working out your credit score and may have different scores for different products. (Kindly from Experian)

    Hi Saints,

Thank you so much for your quick reply. I know I don't have a great credit rating and was worried that this would make it even worse. You've really put my mind at ease.

Not a problem Damo ;) don’t forget about Experian & Equifax and rather than signing up to the credit reference agencies you can pay a one of £2.00 for your statutory report with each of the cra's.

Ignore the scores they provide look at the raw data itself such a credit accounts, searches, electoral roll etc.

Have a look at 'noddle', register and get all info you need free of any charges.

Thanks again to everyone for your help and advice. Sicker, I've pre-registered for Noddle at https://www.noddle.co.uk and now just have to wait for the service to go live.

In the meantime, I have received a very thorough and friendly answer from Money Supermarket explaining that this is a "soft search" that only I can see and it will not show up if my credit report is checked by anyone other than me.

What are they doing wrong? As others have said above, their entry on people's credit report shows only to the person checking their credit report. It truly doesn't affect their credit report in a negative way.

Their "soft checks" are still shown on our reports for our own benefit. I don't know about everybody else, but I would rather see everybody who has looked at my credit report listed - whether it affects my ability to get credit or not. They did, after all, see all my personal credit file - so I have a right to know about the searches.
This is everybody's fault but mine.

The problem is that if you want to see your own Credit Report you have to pay ...

They make mistakes about your circumstances wrong info of your circumstances you will suffer and to change that record it will take a lot of energy, phone call, etc .. They have been a lot of instances have been reported in this forum ...

Why people need to pay to correct the mistakes that have been made by other institutions ?

In the US it is free to see your Credit Recors. here in the UK yo have to pay even just need to check whether they have made mistakes of your records ...
