    How big are the stumps and are they unsightly/in the way?

    The simplest way of getting rid of stumps is to dig out around them and then use an axe and saw to cut through the roots below ground level. Will be hard work though, but if not too big not unreasonable.

    If they're not in the way you can cut them off as close to the ground as you can and then plant plants that will hide them - there is no need to get rid of them, just leave them to rot in situ.

    If they're conifer stumps they will die of their own accord, but most broadleaf hedging will need to be killed with a stump killer to prevent resprouting if you're not going to grub them out.
