Redundancy - Tax position

Just been told that I am to be made redundant. Good news is a good payout.
As the payout is likely to be in this tax year I'm likely to hit the higher rate tax band. Is there anything that can be done to mitigate this? I have been told about "Top Slicing Relief" but dont know what it is
Any help?
