Splitting Assets, working out Value of car

Me and my Fiancee have split up and she has agreed that I can buy her out of the car we jointly own. However we both see different values in the car?

We bought the car 3yrs ago for about 6k. Its a 55 plate Ford Focus Zetec climate 1.6 TDCi, in black with a small dent to bonnet and rear passenger door and paint scuffs on the front bumber corners.

She has seen some cars being sold (by traders on autotrader) and thinks 5-5.5k is a fair value.

However I have done some looking around including getting a quote on webuyanycar and they valued it at about 3.4k.

I have not been able to find many private sales of the same car with same mileage. I think a garage price is higher than what we would get if we sold it privately or to a garage.

I want to keep the car and in my mind the fair price is what we would get if I sold it, which realistically I think is around the 4-4.5k mark due to the small dents and scratches. I did a what car valuation and it reported the following
Dealer £5,110 (i presume this is to buy from a dealer, not what they would give?)
Private £4,530
Part exchange £4,450
Trade £4,190

Is the private cost on What car a fair valuation taking into consideration the small amount of damage?

  • Well I certainly wouldn't take the webuyanycar valuation as a fair one either (just because of the type of company they are)

Could you not take the average of the 4 prices?

Search the completed listings on eBay to find out how much you're likely to get if you sold it to split the money.

We Buy Any Car just pull your pants down; they offered me £105 on a car that i sold privately for £850. Autotrader and garages are prices that the sellers want people to part with, but eBay's completed listings are probably the only place to see what something actually sold for.

Why don't you and she take it together to a Ford showroom which sells secondhand cars, and ask them to buy it off you. They will give you a price, and either you can then give your ex half of the price they offered, and keep it for yourself, or if you think what they offer is too high, proceed with the sale there and then, and buy a new secondhand car with your share of the proceeds.
  • Any car bought for six grand three years ago can't be worth anything like five grand now, especially with all the damage you've described.

If she thinks £5-5.5k is fair offer to sell it to her for that!

Personally, I think it would be fairer and probably quicker all round to just get shot of it and split the proceeds.

    Look no further than Parkers:

Webuyanycar offered me £1200 for my car which is easily worth £3500+........
  • We looked at a lot of focuses for sale a couple of months ago as we needed to change to a more family friendly car.

Bought a 05 plate 1.8 TDCI in great condition bodywork-wise for £4000 and this seemed about average, so maybe £4300 for your newer but worse condition one?

Strangely enough I have always found we buy any car valuations not too bad and when selling within the family we always sell for just a bit more than their valuation as a minimum we could get :)

We buy any car offered me £1850 on a car I would have taken £1950 private sale so I snapped their hand off

  • I had to find out the value of our car when my husband died for probate purposes.
There's a free bit to the site and a paid option. Possibly more realistic than some because they are not buying or selling a car.

I know I cant believe how well its held its value, to be honest i think I got one hell of a good deal when i bought it privately. Similar ones were selling anything from 6-8k at the time!!

She already has a car so is not interested in buying it off me, either getting her half or we just selling it.

Thanks for all the advice :money: I think the 5k valuation is a bit high I just need to tell her that so she doesnt think im taking the pi**.
