Debenhams returns - be prepared for a long wait for refund

Hi

Just a warning to Debenhams shoppers.

I have had a few orders from Debenhams over the last month. I returned some items via the courier on 18/11/11 and have been waiting a long time for a refund. I contacted Debenhams (very long wait on 0844 number) only to be told that refunds take 14 WORKING days! Also told that two of the items, delivered by the courier, should not have been returned by the courier and should be been taken to the post office. Because of 'my mistake' I will have to wait up to six weeks for a refund!. next time I will just return to a store - at least you know it arrives safely and get your refund immediately. Hardly worth ordering online if it is so much hassle to return.

  • To be fair they have 30 days to reurn your money legally before you can issue proceedings or something.

AND this is only the 13th day from when you sent the items back so they still have at least one day to recompense you under their 14 day thingymajig

    Hi

I am sure they are legally right - It just seems a long time to me! They did tell me 14 working days so I will have to wait until 8th December before I can chase it up. And for the items I returned to the wrong place, he said wait until the beginning on January. I do have a Debenhams near me, but whenever I go in they do not seem to have much in stock, so always offer to order online and thats when they take the payment, so it can sit on your credit card for a very long time. Should have sorted a new interest free one I suppose.

Thanks for posting, never returned with Debenhams before so didn't know the timescale.

I posted a week ago, but the money won't be payable on my store card until 29th December so I should be ok for the refund to go through in time :) As I always pay my balance off.
  • Please remember to keep all the postage/return details.
A few years ago I sent a gorgeous very expensive silk dress back to Debenhams and they said it may have been 'stolen' in transit when being returned.
It took a fair few months for them to finally believe me when I showed all copies of paperwork.
To be fair this could happen to any return I just remember to keep all copies of reciepts and returns etc.

If it's a Debenhams branded item (Julien McDonald, Debut, childrenswear, gifts etc) you can purchase these online and return them to your local store still =)

  • I had to return six items a couple of months back.
All but one item was refunded reasonably swiftly - a few days - but one item took five weeks.

I find their online service dated and unhelpful.

And, deciding how to return things is mind numbingly tricky. Out of one delivery (a while ago), although all ordered online in the same order, some had to go back via Royal Mail and some via a courier. When one has limited mobility, visiting the local PO is a real pain. Woe betide anyone putting the incorrect Debenhams returns address on the parcel too! (There are several different addresses)
