Mp4 is a container format for Mpeg4 / DivX
You can re-encode the files to .mpg / .mpeg1 or 2 / .RM / .wa
you will need some software to do it though, i personaly use the Nokia Suite software i got with my phone, but no doubt you could use TmpegEnc with plugins.

Personally, I use Free M4a to MP3 Converter on mymusictools.com This program supports a number of input formats, like AAC, M4a, MP4, M4b, and some other MPEG-4 based audio formats. It converts files easily, quickly and with minimum effort. Moreover, this program is freeware.

You can do it in iTunes.

Change the import format to mp3 in the preferences, and then when you right click on a track, there will be an option to create an mp3 version.

This option always changes to reflect whatever the import settings are.

ETA: Just noticed this thread is very old....oh well, maybe it'll help someone out.
