Refund on faulty cardigan?

Hi,
I bought a cardigan from Banana Republic back in April, only worn it about 5 times and washed it less times than that, it has now ‘pillled’ very badly, fluff everywhere, which I believe makes it ‘faulty’. I certainly can’t wear it to work anymore.
I took it back to one of the stores, they said they could offer me a credit voucher for the current selling price (£19.99) It was about £55 when I bought it, but I don’t have the receipt, only a bank statement, with a larger amount on it (I bought something else at the same time).
I thought if something was faulty, you could get your full money back. Surely a bank statement with a higher value is proof of purchase. The manager said I could try going back to the store I bought it from and they could search their tills for the transaction.
I would really appreciate any advice on this!
Thanks,

Over 6 months you would needed to pay for an independent report if that showed it was a manufacturing fault you could then get a refund. As the cost of the report could be quite a bit and you can't guarantee that they would agree with you.
I would take there offer as it's not bad for a worn and washed item that you can't prove has anything to do with the manufacturer.'The More I know about people the Better I like my Dog'
