Got blank screen with sound vcr to dvd recorder

I am trying to copy a video on to my dvd recorder's hard drive (liteon A740x) and so far I have managed to copy a dark blank screen with sound of the video. What can I do to get the pic as well?
I always wanted to be a procrastinator, never got round to it...
