Ubuntu Linux, WOW

Options
Well I have managed to install Ubuntu Linux on a test machine at work and I must say I am very impressed with it. It looks so smooth and is so easy to navigate round. Windows XP looks positively edwardian in comparison.

Thanks to everyone who contributed to my previous thread on the subject.

If it wasn't for my love of internet gaming I would completely convert my home pc over to linux. Having said that I am going to use a Linux based system to build a media centre type pc.

If anyone is thinking about trying Linux, just do it! I am sure you won't be disappointed. My boss is thinking of installing it on some of his business pc's.

I must be turning into a proper geek, getting this excited over an OS!!!

  • Just out of curiosity did you use Dapper or Edgy?

Also if you have a fairly good graphics card in your machine you can always try out beryl for some eye candy, a good example can be found at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZD7QraljRfM

I have Ubuntu Dapper(I think, not sure) and it is great. Beryl does look awesome but unfortunately my project/test machine will be very basic :-(

    Its great isnt it. :D

If it wasnt for games, Id go 100% for Linux. Its a shame that most of the game manufacturers dont make a Linux release, especially considering that some classic games had their roots in Linux.

Being at a stage where people are discussing Vista, I do question how many people would actually be better off with Linux, but it appears to be a market lead product, and not something that Linux distros could even consider competing with.

I know what your saying Zagu. I have been discussing Ubuntu with my wife today and she even sounded interested, which is astounding for my wife as she normally hates it when I start talking techy, lol.

It's a shame more people don't know about Linux, I have become an overnight convert.

Thanks again for your posts in the other thread. :-)

    Hi raptorman

Many people 'dual boot' Ubuntu with Windows.

It's an option for your home PC maybe.

Exactly that, have been "dual booting" for about six months without any problems.
The startup menu can also be tweaked a little to remove the unwanted versions that show up.

You can get quite a few games to to run under Linux.

Go to WineHq and it'll detail virtually every Windows app and Game you can imagine, and how stable they are in Linux. World Of Warcraft is an example of a popular PC game that works in Linux and quite stable too. Obviously more intense (or modern) games like Battlefield 2142 won't work, or will be so slow it's not worth it.

I do as mentioned, use Ubuntu as my main OS, then boot to a light, stripped down version of Windows (google for nLite), just to play games.

For any Windows development I want to do, I run Windows as a virtual machine (Using VMWare) within Ubuntu (ie it shows up within a window on my Ubuntu desktop). I can do any typical .Net work, web hosting etc... without any problems. Just means I can run Windows for development without having to re-boot.

I've got all of my partitions converted to EXT3 rather than FAT32 or NTFS. It means I get journaling (unlike FAT32) in Linux, and Linux can write to it (unlike NTFS). There's a driver so that Windows can read EXT3 partitions which works fine (google EXT2 IFS). And of course, I'm not in Windows that often so it works fine for me.

Urgh! Watch out for Beryl though. It's very nice but still slightly buggy. And their updates are awful. Of the 5 or 6 updates I've done since using it, it breaks everytime, and within 24hours they've released another update. Just happened again today.
