Roof bars/racks and the Law

Hi, I have a pair of roof bars and the maximum weight is 75kg, I have had a look around the internet but I can't find any legal advice regarding the maximum length, width and height, does anyone know the law regarding roof racks/bars?

  • One of those things that necessitates a bit of common sense I suppose.

What were you thinking of transporting on the roof bars?

Ladders that are 11 feet long meaning they would need to over hang the roof

    In metres, I'm afraid...

    Rear overhang

Less than 1 metre: No requirement

1m - 2m: Render clearly visable (ie- red ribbons, high vis vest, etc) "Clearly visible means within a reasonable distance to a person using the road"

    2m - 3.05: Rear marker board required:

Over 3.05 metres: 2 working days notice to the police must be given.

Projections and overhang to the front:

    0 - 2m: No requirements

2m - 3.05: Front and side marker board.

Overhang above 3.05: 2 working days notice to the police:
  • Unless your car is 11 feet long or less (would have to be very small!) you shouldn't have any issue providing you centralise the ladders along the length of the car

11 feet? That's less than 4 metres. Are you going to be carrying your ladders on a Smart Fortwo or something?

In any case, unless your car is under 2 feet long, you can carry that ladder without the need for any markers or warning flags providing you observe the overhang regs in Gloomendoom's post.

Are ther any rules about the width? Can your load be wider than your car? I actually drive a Renault laguna, my concern were it is going to overhang front and backk

There are rules about width, but you'd have to google them. I strongly doubt it would be legal to carry that ladder sideways on your car though!

A Laguna is around 5 meters long isn't it? If so there will be no overhang given the size of ladder you have, so just strap it down to your roofrack and don't worry about it.

Get famous and transport your ladder at the same time.. Carry it sideways on
    a motorbike.

Wont quite get the same wordplay as the guy carrying a plank though...
