Does this message we have received on ebay sound like a scam to you? The bit that confuses us is the bit about running out of messages

I was wondering if there is any miricle chance you would sell this item to me for a buy it now price please ? I am really bad at making offers so if you have a price in mind that would help tonnes.

I would like to buy it as a birthday gift for someone in the family before I deploy to Afghanistan.

Probably not a 'money' but potentially a sob story scam to get you to sell something cheaply. If you are happy to sell it on a BIN then add the BIN you are happy with to the auction (assuming it doesn't have bids) and respond to the buyer via the ebay message.

Ignore it. Unless someone makes an offer and comes to collect a couple of days before auction ends,
Giving you time to cancel it properly.

I don't speak with any kind of experience but obviously the buyer is claiming to be in the forces, so the number or messages may be a limit on usage by his base, rather than by eBay.
