SMP - Giving notice to leave employment

Hi All,
I think that there is a very quick answer to this (and im sure I've seen it on the site before but my searching skills are rusty)
Basically, i am currently recieving SMP from my employer (and still have 6 months to go) and i know that due to practicalities i will not be returning to work.
I have not received anything over the basic amounts from my employer.
So, am i correct in thinking that i need to give 8 weeks notice before the end of my SMP payments?
Also, is it still correct that my employer will need to pay me for all of the holiday that i have accrued?
Once i have handed in my notice, if i am unsuccessful in obtaining another job will i be able to claim jobseekers allowance?

According to the gov site you just give notice in the usual way.

Why not take the extra 3 months unpaid and give yourself more time to decide and still have the job to go back to if you change your mind?0

Not strictly true. As a parent you have the right to request flexible working but your employer doesn't have to accept your request providing the reject is due to a business need.

Thanks guys,
Unfortunately going back to work is not an option, i work in a town 3 hours drive away from where i live with my partner, until i had the baby i was commuting, now that is not something i want to do - or something that is physically possible or financially worth while.
How long would i have to wait to be eligible for job seekers allowance?

And that could be the full amount of CBJSA that would have been available for you before you would need to change to IBJSA which you would not be elegable for if your partner earns over £105pw (the current couples rate of JSA)0 -
I don't know about the JSA bit, but I resigned from my job a couple of weeks ago due to similar reasons as yours, and had to give notice as per my contract of employment (6 weeks in my case)
You are indeed entitled to your accrued holiday over the year.
