Have been looking for a new small car. Been doing my research and then going to the garages. Am totally fed up listening to the sales patter, being patronised and even lied to by some dealers. Almost bought a car today and the price rose £1000 by the time I had phoned and driven 6 miles to see the car. Want a well known make like Vauxhall, Ford, Peugeot etc. Don't want Hyundai or Kia. Want a basic model as just want a reliable car for work. Not interested in air con, blue tooth, sat nav etc. Have considered Peugeot 107, Vauxhall Agila and Suzuki Alto. Has anyone seen any deals that would keep costs down.
Thanks for any help.

Any reason why you don't want second hand? What's your budget?0

Haven't discounted second hand but would prefer to get a car that is up to 3 years old. Have been looking around and feel a lot are over priced and am getting a better deal on new. Also can get better finance deals with new. Budget is up to £7k0

I'd be saving some money and buying something along the lines of:
A Skoda Fabia 1.4Tdi
We had one for 4 years and 50k miles. Gave us no problems whatsover - used 2 tyres and a set of brake pads in that time. Silly econonomical, no bells and whistles but a decent, honest car which was well specced and good to drive. Silly econonmical, a genuine 60+mpg everywhere and 65Mpg on the motorway.
A bit older than you wanted, but to be honest I really can't see why anyone would spend £7k on a new car.... Bargain basement white goods with no refinement and no residuals.0 -
At £6k there are very few offers and none are from the makes you listed as your first choice. Even the cheapest Fiesta is around the £9k mark which leave you well in the used territory.
A couple of weeks ago the Telegraph motoring site which usually track things like the 'current cheapest car for sale in the UK today' listed the Indian built Suzuki Alto at £6600.
In my opinion you would get much better value than in the used nearly new market compare to this cheaply made 3 star safety rating box.
And to those who say that cars are like white goods, well if I had to drive in a fridge I know I rather do it in a Smeg and not an Indecit!Five exclamation marks the sure sign of an insane mind!!!!!

Fiat Panda
Nissan Pixo
Renault Twingo
Actually, I agree with Nev that I'd prefer a 1 y-o Skoda Fabia (petrol versions are OK too). But I would be tempted with the new VW Up! which does look interesting if a shade over your budget0 -
Save another £1k on a Panda here:-

(ok not the same spec but a great deal0 -
Thanks for all your suggestions. I think my problem is that I have very little interest in cars and just want a reliable basic car so it's like torture going around the garages. In the end I bought a second hand Honda Jazz. Hope it's as good as the write ups. Was really keen on buying a new Vauxhall but the offer that they advertise doesn't seem to be available to most people and life is too short to listen to all the **ap they tell you.0

The 107 or Panda are probably the best value new cars now that Kia have gone nuts with pricing of Picanto - I was astounded at the £10,490 that was on the demonstrator 3dr outside my local dealer - almost twice what I paid for a brand new old model in March!
(plus my father bought a brand new '61' Rio 1.4 '1' (again, outgoing model) for less than £7,000!)0 -
