Tax credit overpayment

A couple of years we were overpaid as when they received my end of year forms rather than adding our figures it seems they selected self-employed rather than employed where there was a figure of 0. After a number of calls from myself telling them it was wrong they finally sent me the details so I could then correct them. At the time I told them to take back the repayment, but they said they would just deduct from future payments.
I think from next year we will no longer be eligible so I wondered what will happen if we still owe money.
Having read the section I realise now that we were under no obligation to repay as it was their error rather than ours, but I guess as I've been paying it back it's a bit late to make that case.
Any advice apprectiated,
Emily
