Affording the payments is one thing, the car will still need to be maintened, petrol, insurance and tax etc too. A lot of people don't realise this, IF I was going to get a loan I'd base it on worse case i.e. affording payments if I was to lose my job etc.
Yes, that is what 'being able to afford the repayments' means.... to me anyway.0 -
Also as said the OP has a cash deposit and a current car. How much is this and what car do you have? Valid questions as we can then suggest other cars where finance won't be needed.0

i have 500 quid for a small amount deposit plus i do have 10 year old vauxhall astra.
i am worried that my car is getting older while everyone elses is getting newer. plus as it is getting older how much longer can i keep going with it.
to answer someones question , yes i can afford paymants plus all so afford petrol , tax and everything else0 -
Run the astra into the ground with just very basic servicing, then sell for scrap (£150ish). In the meantime, save. Then you should have a nice little sum to buy somethign decent.
It sounds very much like you "want" a newer car, rather than need one. By all means finance or take loans for "needs", but for wants it's just frivilous spending. IMO.0 -
Your generation of astra is a decent enough car as they go - lets say you sell it for £5/600 and put your extra £500 to that. You could buy something along the lines of a 2004/5 mondeo, same age vectra, focus, mazda 6, 2003/4 octavia or fabia.
If you wanted something a bit more show than just a newer car then you'll get an earlyish e39 for that money easily or any number of 156's including the v6 for not far off.The toledo v5 of early to mid 2000's is a nice car that costs absolute peanuts though hardly a looker
More go than show e36 328i saloon for about £600, the alfa v6 mentioned above, e39 528i, vectra v6, mondeo v6...the list is much bigger but you get the idea.0 -
Everyone elses car is getting newer? Every car i see on the road is getting older.
Sounds like your trying to keep up with the joneses. When i buy a car its all about reliablility.
No good having something newer and shinier if it doesnt work properly and i cannot afford to repair it.
Ive bought cars for less than £500 and run them for years with minimal costs.Censorship Reigns Supreme in Troll City...0 -

So its peer pressure you're really suffering from then? - The pressure to be seen keeping up with others..
You're best of doing some research. Look for an old exec car thats made by a less popular brand.. something like an omega from vauxhall. Not only are they reliable but they still have a good reputation and are still pretty good looking cars. Plus because they're exec cars they're usually better looked after than the average car.
Look on ebay at cars within your range. Look for some you like the look of and then do research into them to find out about them and their reliability.0 -
No need o put yourself in debt to keep up with the Jones's. Your car is running, better to keep it as there's no guarantee what you'll get will be as realible. Nothing wrong with your car, save up while you can till yours NEEDS replacing.0

My car was registered 10 years ago yesterday and it's only just run in!0

Park next to mine.
I just bought a late 80's car as my general runaround.0
