Separation and money

husband has left family home, how do i work out if financial arrangements are acceptable apart from waiting to see if me and kids can manage - have looked at various websites but can't seem to find the answers - my brain is upset so that won't be helping:(

Depending on how many kids you've got, your ex will have to pay maintenance, it's 15% for 1, 20% for 2 and 25% for 3 or more. Or if you have a mortgage, you might prefer him to pay that in lieu of maintenance. If possible though, try and get a private arrangement as the CSA are a nightmare!!!
  • he is offering to pay mortgage and bills and i pay food and clothes for two kids - i don't want more than i am entitled to but don't want to have to keep asking for more money - its only just happened so i know i will have to wait and see but if other people poke their noses in and say he doesn't have to pay quite so much i may be in dire straits!

  • Do you have a job and can you earn enough to pay for your food-bills and clothe yourself and your kids? If you're an experienced housekeeper you could just about feed your kids on the child benefit. Just about. Did you know you can feed a family of four for £100 a month? See the cheap-family-recipes.org website for how to do it.

Expect every friend and acquaintance of your husband's to tell him that he's being too generous.

You have to do what you think is best, but personally I wouldn't want my ex to pay my bills! You'll have to learn to manage to pay them yourself, it might be fine now, but what happens if he meets someone and wants to set up home with her? Will he still be expected to pay your bills, and if he cannot afford it and stops, how will you manage if you have relied on him to do it for you. It's best to grasp the nettle now, before you get to used to him paying for everything.

If he is prepared to pay for the mortgage for now, then that will give you a bit of breathing space, to find out what benefits you will be entitled to, or working tax credits if you work.
