No it's not, you CANNOT CHANGE THE MEANING OF A MATHEMATICS SYMBOL TO SUIT YOUR NEEDS.
It is what it is...

< = less than
The link in the other post tells you this quiet clearly...If it looks like a duck, and quacks like a duck, we have at least to consider the possibility that we have a small aquatic bird of the family anatidae on our hands

Aaaaaaargh.....No they don't!!!!
30>60 STILL means "30 is greater than 60", but that doesn't make the expression TRUE!
You can say "a cow is bigger than an elephant", that doesn't make it true!
I'm going to go lie down in a dark room after this.
Actually, I was going to suggest you do that, Max, before you blow a fuse. I am going to go food shopping - much more relaxing than this.

Enjoy your nap.
But we read left to right!!!!!!! The sign is read left to right! You can't just change the meaning of a sign because you are reading it the wrong way!

I will say it one more time. Yes it does.Sambucus_Nigra wrote: »However, > does not always mean greater than and < does not always mean less than.0 -

...is greater than....
you need the ... on EITHER side to quantify it.
Just as 5>3 means '5 is greater than 3' it ALSO means that '3 is less than 5'.
Oh my...I give up...If it looks like a duck, and quacks like a duck, we have at least to consider the possibility that we have a small aquatic bird of the family anatidae on our hands

I'm going to need a couple of valiums too! lol0 -

No, you can IMPLY that '3 is less than 5', but it means '5 is greater than 3'If it looks like a duck, and quacks like a duck, we have at least to consider the possibility that we have a small aquatic bird of the family anatidae on our hands

I will say it one more time. Yes it does.
Indeed.
I am reaching the point that Basil Fawlty reaches when trying to explain something to Manuel: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s6EaoPMANQM

What you are talking about here is what we call "mathematical equivalence". Therefore:Sambucus_Nigra wrote: »Just as 5>3 means '5 is greater than 3' it ALSO means that '3 is less than 5'.
5 > 3 (five is greater than three)
Is equivalent to
3 < 5 (three is less than five)
In mathematics, "equivalent to" does not quite mean "the same as".0 -

There's no need to be quite so rude.
Not everyone in the world was taught maths reading from the left to the right.
For me, I see '>' meaning that the thing on the left is greater than the thing on the right.
> on it's own is meaningless until something is on either side.
With all due respect, I am allowed to see that, as this is how I see things. If you haven't got it - please don't flaunt it. TIA.0
