britannia hold deeds from owner

i have been with britannia b/s for 25 yrs,i recieved a letter stating it was time to pay off the mortgage so as things have changed since theni borrowed half what i owed.the house was in j oint names my husband and mine..he died 11years ago britannia was informed,i became ill had a bypass diabetis and ataxia which i became disabled and on benifits plus an o a p .
i got a letter saying congrats your mortgage is paid of...then a few weeks ago i got another letter saying that they would send them to me.then another letter saying as i lived in scotland i had to get a lawyer to release the deeds,which would cost ,then an email saying i also had to pay thier charges.
they have been paid in full have the deeds of my house,can any 1 advise what i should do.
