Have always hated Roses but used to love Quality Street but not anymore. I just don't think they taste the same.
I think lots of people buy them at Christmas because it has been a 'tradition' in their family to do so and continue doing so even though they have noticed that these sweets are not the same as the were.
That's what a good advertising campaign & so called 'price cuts' do for you.
When did you last see Roses or Quality Street sold at full price in one of the big supermarkets in the run up to Christmas?

My wife has always bought tin(s) of chocolates for the Christmas holidays, kind of makes it a tradition in our household.

Although I gace up with Roses and Quality Street years ago when they stopped doing coffee creams.

Now its things like "Celebrations" etc however they do not always make it to Christmas day, certainly not beyond.
A few years ago we would have several tins, this year we only have the one.

It's not so long ago they were selling the larger/heavier tins and offering REAL bargains:

I bought a couple of the tins that are £5 for a raffle and when I handed them over the lady commented how light they were, and I had to agree.

A tin of these types of chocs used to be pretty darned stuffed with chocs!

So explain the tradition - what do you do with them, when do you open the tin, at the same time as opening presents, at midnight on Christmas Eve, when you get back from church, with Christmas dinner? Who started this tradition, and why does it have to be this particular make of chocolate?

If I ever ate chocolate at all it would be something like Green& Black's. Cadbury's is more sugar than chocolate, and I wouldn't buy it.

Blimey - judging by your tone, Christmas must be really cheerful round your way...
  • I much prefer Quality street - more toffees :)

Brace yourself OP, here's proof that you could once get an imperial pound (~450g) of Cadbury's Fruit & Nut for 1'6... which I think is about 7.5p in today's money.

Not only do smaller bars exist now, but they cost more than 7.5p as well!!! What is the world coming to...?

Which is precisely why I think they are naff. All the selection tins and boxes of choc's have way too many toffee's, caramels and similar boring fillings and not enough nice ones.

My favourites have always been Strawberry Cremes, Orange Cremes, Coffee Cremes. Once upon a time there would be a box somewhere which might have a Lemon Creme, or Rraspberry or blackcurrent -sigh! not anymore.

I even remember one year there being a Gooseberry Creme - think that might have been Roses.

And, no! Truffles don't count as acceptable substitutes either!

Revise - the gooseberry was in QS. Look at this wiki for QS -How many great favours have been discontinued http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Quality_Street_(confection)!!!

    1- no it isn't
    2-it didn't

I buy a tin for my office cleaner and a tin for the canteen staff and the tea trolley lady in work. I don't buy any for myself.
