Friends with benefits! (Plastering!!)

Evening all,

Not sure how popular this post will be but since this is MSE, lets give it a go!

I have my lounge ready for skimming, I've done nearly all the edging and stud work taped the joints etc and so the next bit to finish off is the SKIMMING!

Is there such a forum or thread whereas you can trade jobs? I dont have a trade to speak of but have always done my own DIY, plumbing etc and more recently installed a wired 1GB LAN network which is lightening fast for streaming etc.

My aim is to see if a really kind plasterer could give up 2 days max of their time to help me finish, in return I can either labour to equal time on other jobs at weekend, ie 2 days plastering I would labour for 3 or 4 depending; or install a network or something similar.

Not given this too much though as I dont think there will be any takers, but its worth a shot in this current money savvy environment we live,

If indeed there is such a kind soul that would be able to help out then I live in the North West, Stockport area.

I know everyone has to earn money but just thought this was worth a shot before I made a pigs ear of a 18 month project.

Feedback welcome, :)

Outside of MSE there might be (although I am not aware of such a forum). On here you might fall foul of the mods on the grounds that you cant swap personal details (happy to be shot down in flames if I am talking bull waste)

i think if you ask a plasterer thery'll probably tell you where to go , the best you could do is ofer to labour for him

You might have to learn how to plaster. - it's a bit of a knack, and hard to explain in writing, easier if you watch someone doing it. but if you practice on a small wall first, you could find that it's doable.
  • I remember years back a barter system where you swapped/traded stuff/skills. But I can't remember what it was called. To be honest I don't think a good plasterer to do a skills swap.

Watch as many videos as you can online, read all the tips and then have a go because I think it's likely to be the only way you are going to get it done without paying out a lot of money.......plastering doesn't come cheap as you might already know.

I have some to do myself, it's only a 3ft wall so shouldn't be too much of a problem like larger walls. I do have other walls that need re-plastering so that small wall will be a good place to experiment and learn.

My husband has taught himself. Bought a really run down 4 bed house last year and he's plastered every room in the whole house by himself with zero previous experience! The first room he did looks a bit rough but that was the kitchen which was basically an empty room after ripping out everything to refit a new kitchen and redo plumbing etc so most walls are covered by wall units anyway. He's just finished (this has taken him over a year to get every room done as DIY takes forever) the last room and he's doing it like a pro now. Even done work for family! He just seems to have the knack of it. He says it's hardwork though and doesn't actually enjoy it so not likely to be quitting his job to become a plasterer. He watched some videos online and just went for it.

I would say just have a go on a piece of board and see what happens.
It's only a bargain if you need it.

    Hello dexstroyer

Chunks is partly correct..........it's incorrect to say MSE has mods or moderators but correct regarding the Forum Rules which do not allow members to swap personal details:

Why can't I give something to/buy something from someone on the forum?

The safety of our forum users is paramount and for this reason we can't allow anyone to exchange their personal details either on the open forum or via PM, however honourable the intention.

This means we don't allow selling/trading/exchanging/swapping or giving as gifts, nor links to your ebay auctions, or other forms of advertising.
