Have just had a brainwave - when I go to Oz I wont be using my UK mobile account which I have free mins and internet access on, so I think I'll get her a smartphone which she can use with my sim card. I reckon that if she has any problems it will be easier for her to get someone to show her how to use a mobile she is carrying with her.

Slightly off-topic but I have a Skype query.......does anyone else find it takes ages to close down? Mine is on the toolbar - despite attempts to unpin - and seems not to want to shut down for a good 3 mins which is annoying when want to log off and do something else. Any remedies short of removal?

  • This sounds like a perfect situation for one of those Skype landline telephones ot adapter. Some don't need a computer to use, just plug them into a broadband router/modem. For example ....

or Skype Adapter for an existing landline phone

Although I'd really recommend an ATA adapter, instead of Skype. This solution works with hundreds of VOIP providers, not just Skype, and gives you cheap or free calls to almost everywhere.

All you need is an ATA adapter, broadband router and an account with a VOIP provider. The beauty of this solution is, although you need a PC for the initial set up, you don't need a computer to make the calls.
