Is a bin shed/bike store an outbuilding? Planning permission needed?

I want to put a bin shed/bike store on my drive. My drive is wide enough for 3 cars. I've checked my local council planning permission website and it says no outbuilding forward of the principal elevation fronting a highway. I'm assuming they say no to any buildings at the front as it could block the view for drivers going down the road, I remember a house I looked at had a maximum height the fence could be at the front as it was on a corner of a road for that reason.

It would want it to be approx 1100cm high, 700cm depth and 1800cm wide.

So would a bin shed/bike store be classed as an outbuilding?
It's only a bargain if you need it.

You will need to site the shed level with/behind the line of the front elevation. Otherwise you might get picked up on it. Really to stop places starting to look like Steptoe's yard.
  • Yes it would be classed as an outbuilding, therefore as it is forward of the dwelling it would require planning permission from the Council.

Yup, agree with above. Planning permission had to be obtained for the shed in fron of my house.
You had me at your proper use of "you're".
  • Thanks. I googled "definition of a building" and as it will be a structure with roof and walls it is classed as a building.

Wonder if I could get round this by it only having a roof and one wall? So more like a mini car port.

It's only so I can store my pushbike at the front of my house as I have a narrow path down the side of my house so not big enough to get the bike in and out easily.

Although if you live in a conservation area, AONB or National Park, that would also need planning permission!

I would be very careful. I lovely couple I know has just been forced to take down a summer house they had built in their garden. They are heart broken. If in doubt check with your local councils

  • Just had a car port built and literally just consisted of plastic sheeting between two fences but the planning office seemed to be pretty strict on the matter. I think it's always a good idea just to check. It's not worth having to take it all down after all that hard work if they feel like being strict.
