Ladies suits

"Power" dressing really is very sad, you can look smart without getting suited, and I see so many women in really horrible suits that rightly or wrongly, I do make a negative judgement about them! A well-cut and accessorised dress is much better.
The problem with suits is that cheap ones really do look cheap because of nasty material and poor cuts. I also think that a suit only looks nice for a few wears, before going off them! Some women seem to think that any jacket makes them look smart, most make them look tasteless.
If you're heart is set on a suit, I'd recommend Planet, Jigaw or M&S. Matalan suits look plain nasty.
I'm not exactly a power dresser :rotfl: but smart clothes are generally expected for formal interviews, and the easiest way to look smart is with a suit. Unfortunately I work in a field where dresses are generally inappropriate, there are some lovely skirts and dresses around that are great for work, just not my work
I totally agree that cheap looking suits are worse than no suits, but £300 for a suit from Jigsaw is not exactly in my DFW budget
If you know your body shape and get the RIGHT suit, and avoid that nasty shiny material, even a budget suit can look fine and hold up pretty well. Savings target: £25000/£25000

I spent a good hour or so in M&S recently looking at suits. They were all polyester
Bf had just found a beautiful wool suit in TKMaxx, so I was not impressed with the M&S offerings.
I bought some in Austin Reed (though a little more than you were looking to pay). One at normal price, but with discounts and cashback, and a couple in their Outlet store, where everything was at least 50% off the RRP. They fit very well (some of the ones I tried on didn't, though).
Having said that, I have a Tesco suit that isn't as good quality, but that I do/did wear for interviews. While the material isn't fantastic, the cut is very flattering for me, and I am considering getting it copied next time I need a new suit. That was about £50 for the jacket and skirt.0 -
I did have a Tesco suit which was a lovely colour/style and decent material (thin, but not shiny polyester). Unfortunately I find their sizes really weird, and seem to fall directly between 2 sizes where one is uncomfortably tight and the other noticeably loose!! I've had it a couple of years though and it's pretty worn out, hence the hunt for a new one!Savings target: £25000/£25000

I have a wardrobe full of gorgeous suits - MaxMara, Nicole Farhi, Planet, LK Bennett, Gerry Weber and don't think a single one cost me more than £25! All in immaculate condition when I got them from ebay... Before ebay I'd shop in [STRIKE]second hand shops[/STRIKE] oops dress agencies. I'm an odd size 12 trousers, 10 jackets and skirts, but if it doesn't fit I relist or pass on to someone.
I could probably afford to buy new these days, but having worked in fashion, I know the mark up on full price ladies clothes to be 75% and I really grudge paying that (knowing the garments will be reduced in 5 or 6 weeks time!)
I do prefer dresses but they are less versatile, whereas suits you can wear over and over again to the same meetings/places with different tops scarves etc.0 -
I bought a lovely smart suit from LK Bennett in the sale last year. cant remember exactly how much it was but I'm sure it was reasonable. The tailoring was very well designed. Im quite an awkward shape as my boobs fit a 12/14 but my waist is more a 10, I have always struggled to find suit jackets that fit.
Not sure how daring you are willing to be but I have got into wearing high waisted skin tight black trousers (American Apparel) with a fitted white shirt and a black tie. I love the look as its a take on a mans suit and slightly different. I picked the shirt and tie up from Ebay so it cancelled out the £70 I spent on the trousers :-DChaos is inherent in all compounded things. Strive on with diligence. -Buddha0 -
