Suspicious call - Scottish Power at 140am?

Options
Not sure if this is where it goes as Im new here, but I woke this morning to a missed call from a with held number.

I received a call at midnight or just after from an English voice saying it was Scottish Power, could they arrange an appointment to read the meter. I told the guy to phone me tomorrow, and he said is 430-5 allright. When i said "In the afternoon" he said "Well I dont work afternoons so AM, we keep trying to get hold of you at different times".

I hung up on the guy, and now at 140am I have received another call, when I answered and was toldit was them, I hung up. They rang back twice but I cancelled the call.

Im happy for them to ead my meter and bills are all paid on time however it sounded suspiscious that they rang for an appointment and are they allowed to even call this late on my mobile??

Hi. Why do you think the call was from ScottishPower?
  • They said it was Scottish Power and wanted to arrange a meter reading.

I am shocked at this. I worked at ScottishPower before deregulation when it was the SSEB and then before MANWEB became a ScottishPower company.

The only time now an "english" accent would contact you is from the fomer MANWEB offices. And certainly not at that time in the morning. After 8pm they are 100% closed.

I still have friends that work there and I know there are 3rd party telphone centres that may do business on behalf of SP, but am 100% certain they will not telephone you at that time.

It is not ScottishPower I promise you.

    Good luck.

No company would phone you at that time.

Do they usually phone to arrange a meter reading? Or is there a reason why they need to? Ours usually simply turn up because they're covering our area.

It is almost certainly someone fishing for information, trying to get times when you'll be in - so then they know when you're out.

I'd report it to both the police and Scottish Power, so they're both aware of the scam and make sure you don't give out any information if they phone again.

  • Thanks guys, I'll giive them a ring tomorrow. It definetly seemmed strange to get called so late. We've never had them read the meter before so Im not sure how they usually arrange it.
