farmerswife - I am all FOR hanging meat properly - but prepacked meat from a supermarket or even a good butcher, from a freezer which isnt working? I would NOT use!
I am not a slave to sell by or even use by dates! I use my eyes, my nose and my common sense! and if the meat was suss - I wouldnt use it. I have had food poisoning and it isnt pleasant..........my tummy is sensitive and I just wouldnt risk it!
was there much else in the freezer hun? does your home insurance cover the contents for freezer breakdown? if so, then chuck the lot and claim under your insurance. (photo the contents and give a guesstimate on value).0 -
I'm all for the whole 'not wasting anything' - I really do hate waste - but I'd rather not kill myself in the process.
I'd chuck it, I'm afraid.0 -
If it smelled alright I would probably eat it to be honest...not killed me yet!
Thats it.. its the smell that you go by. Off beef smells rancid and if you touch it it will be tacky. The green colour as others have said it really no indication at all. All the green means is that it has been exposed to the air. Thanks for all your replies, I've decided to give it to my other half, if he doesn't die then I will try it myself lol

I wouldn't risk it food does not have to smell or even taste off to cause food poisoning.
The worst conditions to store food is in a freezer which is not working properly, it may well have been on it's way out for some time and not holding the correct temperature potentially meaning that the food inside could have come past the safe freezer temperature and then back down again quite a few times.
I am all for money saving and old style but sometimes it is just not worth it.
Anyone who has ever experienced proper Food Poisoning as opposed to an upset tummy for a day or two would not wish it on anyone.
Severe food poisoning is no laughing matter and can cause huge complications including depending on the bug in question but really is it worth it for the sake of a couple of quid?
I totally agree that using your nose and eyes in most cases will be sufficient and that sell by dates in general can be extended but this is for food that has stored in the correct conditions not in a dodgy freezer that is not holding the temperature correctly.1 Sealed Pot Challenge # 1480

Well, did your OH turn green?"We could say the government spends like drunken sailors, but that would be unfair to drunken sailors, because the sailors are spending their own money."

Thank you all for your replies, just to let you know he hasnt died lol, he was fine, loved the stew and even ate it the next night as I wouldn't eat it, I have had salmonella and was very very poorly which is why I'm usually so careful and would of thrown it away but he wanted it and luckily it was fine and even one of the best stews he had eaten.
I still dont think I would do that again though, and I know not to use the freezer in that fridge again!
Edited to add: The beef didn't smell at all or it would of been straight in the bin.0
