Beef green!! Really quick question!

Hi all just a quick question, I started prepping a stew for tomorrow earlier and when I got my beef out I realised the freezer part of my fridge wasnt working properly, major stress but I thought the meat looked fine so prepped everything else and just cut the meat and it's very green in the middle, obviously I have thrown that straight away but would the red parts from round the edges be ok? I dont want to poison us but I like my stew lol

Thanks all for any advice

    I wouldn't.
I wanna be in the room where it happens
  • Neither would I eat it to be honest with you.
  • How long has it been unfrozen?

When you say green do you mean it has like the green shine.. How does it smell? What sort of cut is it? Was it a whole joint?

Many supermarkets dont hang beef long enough anyway, thats why beef is the only meat which is safe to buy after its sell by date...

Would it shock you to hear that when I shoot a pheasant we then hang it as it is feathers and all for at least one week and sometimes 2

Good point - topside & silverside often have a green sheen like on a cockerel's tail feathers, and that means they are top quality. But a nasty dull greyish-green = chuck it. Supermarkets also flood the packs with gas to keep the outside of the meat red & attractive to the eye, so the outside being red is no guarantee that it's OK to eat, I'm afraid.

Same here but cook it for a very long time such as in a stew. That'll kill anything.

Beef quite often gets an iridescent green sheen, like feathers or petrol on a puddle. It's normal and caused by oxidation of the iron in the blood or something like that. If it smells okay then I'd eat it. If it smells the slightest bit off though, either take it back to the shop or bin it. Don't eat any of it.

  • Yes, beef gets oxidised and changes its colour but not to what I would describe as green. Is the meat also slimy? I don't think it's worth taking the risk. Do you have any pets? Dogs are pretty good at telling what has gone off...Still...if in doubt, throw it out.
