Does Venice Smell Bad ? !

Hello all, this is actually a serious question !

Does Venice smell in the summer, I think I've been told before that the canals get v whiffy in the heat.

I'm thinking of booking a break to Venice end of Aug.beginning of September, but might go for later in the year if the romance will be spoilt by the pong !
Cheers

No smell during a hot visit in august
  • I went in May last year - nice weather and no niffs :)
    de do-do-do, de dar-dar-dar ;)
  • I used to work for an Italian holiday company and have been to Venice at different times of the year.
Generally the high season is slightly different for Venice as in the July/Aug heat it can smell (not always)- so the peak season tends to be late Aug/Sept when its not so hot.
Any spelling mistakes are entirely on purpose to check you're paying attention :p
  • I've been to Venice four times at different times of the year, and noticed no smell.
You can get fairly voracious mosquitos though, at duk in the summer, so avoid eating outside near the water in the evening.

(I know this is one of the attractions, but if you had my Histamine reaction.....)

I have been several times and never noticed a smell.
There is a toll to get in if you are going by car which is put towards cleaning up the place.
I think it used to smell a long time ago, but I went about 9 years ago and it didn't smell then, so what you've been told is proabbly out of date.

If you are travelling on a coach tour (or by boat) then you won't have to pay the toll (should be included) but if you are going by car then I think you will have to pay (a few quid).

  • Last time we went for the day from Padua, by car.

There is a large multi story car park at the end of the causeway and we paid 12 euros to park all day. (several years ago now)

It's a short walk to the vaporetto station for line 1, which travels the length of the Grand Canal.

Alternatively, there are trains and buses from all over the region.

I've been about 7 or 8 times at various times of the year and have never noticed any particular smell, no worse than London on a bad day anyway.

Venice is quite wonderful, I love it to bits.
