Admiral won't insure Audi A3 - insurance group 99?!

Hi,

Was wondering if anybody could shed some light on the confusing world of car insurance.

I'm 26, I have a 1.4 Puma at the moment and called Admiral to see how much it would cost to change to a 1.8 Audi A3 Sport from 2000, reckon it's not even worth 1k.

They wouldn't quote & said they couldn't insure me on that car because my current car is an insurance group 7 but the Audi is an insurance group 99?! I have been searching on the internet but to no avail, seems the insurance groups go 1-50?

I did a quote online on confused.com and Admiral wouldn't quote for the car but I did get a quote from Diamond - who are the same company! Obviously I'd rather stick with Admiral as otherwise I will need to pay to cancel the policy...

Am I missing something obvious as to why they won't insure this car? It's a nice car but I wouldn't have thought it would be top of any thieves wish list and it isn't that quick - I insured a 1.8 Celica last year and that wasn't a problem.

Any advice/information appreciated!

The companies can have as many groups as they like, Doesnt mean anything, Ive insured group 16 cars on the old 20 group
system for less than a group 13 car.

Your insurance may have had a lot of claims on A3's so load the premium to reflect that. Simply find a company that have not
hand any claims on A3's and it will be cheap.

I remember the days of the XR3i and RS Turbo's, It was almost impossible to insure them. I used to be with swinton's back then
when they had a local office some real humans who knew their jobs.
Used to get chatty with them, They had 14 of the above cars and had a claim on all of them. Theft or attempted theft.

It is really nothing to do with what the car is worth, it's more to do with the damage you can do to other people/property.

Although it takes a lot more time you would be more likely to find an insurer by getting quotes from insurers websites rather than comparison sites.

It sounds like they've made an error with the group on their system for this model, try playing around on the Admiral website to see if it will give you quotes for models either side of this one, if they'll quote for a (for instance) S3 there shouldn't be any reason why they wouldn't quote for a Sport.

^^ gets my vote too, although whether you'll be able to get far enough up the call centre food chain to get something done about it is a different matter

Admiral have their own grouping categories, I'm told my car is a 3 for them. Does seem strange - I'm sure they've given me (I'm 20) a quote for a BMW 7-series before now - but at the end of the day they can choose whether or not they want to insure you.

Re RS Turbos - wasn't there a time when 5 figure premiums for them were the norm!?

I dont think your car is a grp 99 it maybe just the code they use to decline to quote due to other u/w criteria. Directline etc use the same code for vehicle they are unable to insure.i.e certain vans, pickups, imported cars etc
  • Thanks all.

I called back tonight and got through to somebody else who gave me a quote! He couldn't explain why they couldn't quote yesterday, I had to give him the quote reference I got via Diamond & he went to check with his manager & came back with the quote.

Odd - either a fault with their system or somebody who didn't know what they were doing yesterday - silly though as they could have lost a customer!
  • Or could have been an error in a pricing update, if their own website wouldn't quote it does sound as if it is not just their call centre agent making a mistake.

Not my favourite company in the world but the Admiral group call centres do tend to go off and ask their supervisor for things if you push them rather than simply sticking with "computer says no" like many other companies would.
