Hypnosis - any experiences??

Whilst looking into solutions to my sons extreme dental fear - I have been hearing a bit about hypnosis.

So two questions for anyone with any personal experiences..
1) suitability for children (he's 8) regards dental phobia
2) success for weight loss (for me!)

I am very interested now in finding out about the assistance with weight loss. I don't expect miracles and everything to disappear without any work - I go to the gym 2/3 times a week and would love to do even more exercise if I weighed less and was physically up to it. I think my problem is compulsive eating - as even when I'm not hungry I eat, I literally cannot resist food (especially chocolate!). So I am wondering if the hypnosis would help with this side.

anyone??

It might be cheaper to get one the Paul McKenna books with c.d. to try it out - Amazon do them for weight loss and phobias etc.

If you are going to visit a local "hypnotherapist" - it's best to get a recommendation from someone you trust! (Some GP's are open minded enough to suggest them or the organisation you contact to find a qualified one in your area).

I used one, several years ago now for a different issue and it was enormously helpful - still have the tape, still listen to it occasionally because it's very relaxing :D

    I agree with elona's suggestion too :)

Oh I'm interested in this thread, my GP mentioned hypnotherapy to me recently wrote out 2 names of people one of which came highly recommended from him & other patients, the other he was suspicious of & scribbled out the name. I would ask for recommendations first from your GP or anyone else you know.

i found these links through google

The following link includes therapists who work with children http://www.general-hypnotherapy-register.com/

I'd be very interested to know how you get on, good luck, mini

Have just ordered a self-hypnosis CD (from Tesco - it was cheaper than Amazon ! that money saving lark just gets into your blood doesn't it!)

Thanks for the suggestion on that one - never thought of it myself. I'm not ruling out having hypnosis with a professional but got to be worth a try with a CD first.

I went for a Glenn Harrold one rather than Paul McKenna after I did some reading up it appealed to me more - also he does a variety of topics I may be interested in if mine works for me (stop smoking for my hubbie and a special childrens one - a confidence booster)

still interested in any personal experiences re weight loss through hypnosis

VixxAnn, 2 things in your post rang a bell with me.

Hypnosis - tried it years ago when I wanted to stop smoking. I was so interested to see what was going to happen I didn't go under properly so it didn't work

Dentist - After a very bad experience as a teenager I became dreadful, normally couldn't sleep for 2 or 3 nights before the appointment and cancelled most of them. (still had to pay of course)

I was once struck off a dentists list because when he proded an exposed nerve I tore my fingernails through the varnish on the chair arms and kneed the dentist somewhere I shouldn't. I'm not kidding, it was so embarrasing.

Now have a brilliant dentist who has never, ever hurt me, even though he has done root canal and all sorts of other work. I still get a bit nervouse but it is less with each visit. Visualisation techniques helped with this in the early days, Normally the moment I hear the drill I imagine myself on a palm fringed beach. wierd but it works and it is apparently very sucessful for children.
 In my new basket: A slightly whiffy blanket; Racy’s 2nd favorite jumper; remains of a slipper; 2 sticks (1 chewed); bouncy ball collection (4); Racy’s iPod :shhh: and a large sock (found under Racy's bed)

    Hi VixxAnn

I went to a hypnotherapist for assistance to lose weight. The hypnotherapist in question was recommended to me by a very happy customer of his. The session was very relaxing etc however it did nothing to change my attitude to food or to myself, nor had it any affect on my habits. As part of follow up he encouraged me to get back to him if I was unhappy. I went back and he repeated the session without charge. There was still no positive result in my case.

I'm sorry to give a bad report about hypnotherapy, as I know from other people that does work - it just doesn't work on everyone. Maybe I have a closed mind or something and was unable to accept the change in behaviour he was trying to instill in me. If you are keen then give it a chance and find the very best therapist you can.

Someone recommended the "Lose Weight" thread in the "I Wanna" board. It's excellent there, very supportive. There are lots of different approaches to weight loss, so even if hypnosis doesn't crack it for you then there are other ideas to follow. If you love your food as much as I do you might enjoy the Slimmers World method...you can eat as much as you like from selected foods (and no they aren't all vegetables or fruit!) and you still lose weight! A cheap way to check it out is to buy one of their magazines and read it cover to cover.

I'm currently having hypnotherapy treatment for insomnia, whilst I honestly cannot see any direct effect as I cannot seem to put myself into a trance, even though I go into one really quickly when he does it, I do seem to be sleeping a little bit better. However, at £50 an hour, I should damn well hope something is improving!! I'm quite ambelivent about the clinical benefit to be honest.
For what it's worth I've never had any success with the self-hypnosis tapes.
