Payments on cancelled credit cards

Options
Does anyone know whether retailers can still charge to cancelled credit cards? I've paid off a couple in full and cancelled them recently, but I'm worried that some forgotten automatic yearly renewal will kick in for something (e.g. tastecard, which happened last month) and that a retailer will try and charge one of those cards. If they do, what happens? Do I get a bill from my old card company, or will the payment simply not go through?

  • The payments may well go through.
It is up to you to cancel/amend continuous authority payments on any cards.
  • Continuous and recurring payments can still be charged as jonesmufcforever states.

Yes thanks I do realise it's up to me - I'm just trying to work out whether any payments are likely to be returned, or whether I will get charged - it sounds like this is possible; but is it likely?
  • They will in all probability charge it to the card. Ask your provider if they would reject it, but safe to assume they won't.
  • Don't rely on somebody else to do your work for you - assume that if you do not cancel them that they WILL go through.

Thanks, I will assume they go through - though a little less attitude from your responses wouldn't go amiss. This has nothing to do with my relying on someone else to do "my work", I'm simply trying to determine cause and consequence. Perhaps next time you can turn the righteous patronising down a notch!
  • When I closed a card recently I was told that such payments would go through, and I would then receive a statement to pay.
  • Basically it depends on the retailer and how they set up the original transaction.

If they applied for a recurring transaction authority, they can use the same authorization code as the one they originally received from the first transaction.

If they request a new payment on the subscription renewal date, then the payment won't be authorized by your card company. This is why you always get the disclaimer when closing any card.

This is a good question tbh. I have sometimes bought a subscription using a card (over the last 25 years or so) and completely forgotten about it. So far, these have shown up on my debit card so no problems. But how would I know if I had any outstanding on another account, particularly a credit card account? Please accept my faulty memory!

If I called all my CC providers and asked, " Is a there a continuous authority payment on this account?" would they know? If they did, would they be able to tell me that a payment WILL be made on such-and-such a date in the future? I think not.

I would hope that scottishblondie's response is right; that the CC company will simply send you a statement. At that point you can start to sort out cancelling and so forth with the retailer.

You asked the question I replied ;)
