Claiming HB whilst 'living' with ex

Hello
I need some advice and I hope someone may be able to help me.
I have been living with someone for 2 years.
However, we have got to the point where we know our relationship is not working (although we are still friends).
The problem is he needs to boost his income (which has been halved in the last two months) and wants to let out his spare bedroom, which I am using at the moment.
He doesn’t want to chuck me out and make me homeless (which he could do as the property is solely his) and as I am on jsa and have no assets I cannot rent privately. I have no children so I won’t be on the priority list for housing and would probably be put in B & B accommodation, which at 52 is pretty daunting.
As we are no longer a couple, can I claim Housing Benefit even though I have lived there for 2 years? I am quite happy for someone to come round to see that we are living separately.
We have never shared our finances and all the bills are paid by my ex and are just in his name.
Obviously, when I can find a job I will move out and rent privately, but in the meantime would I be able to make a claim?
Thank you for your help.

Why not just move out, rent a 1 bed flat and claim LHA until you're working again? Much the simplest option.0

If you have previously been living with someone as a non-dependant, you cannot get HB as long as that person still lives in the same dwelling.

Sorry, no, you can't do what you want to do.
If the relationship has broken down, why not move out? Whilst you are low priority for social housing there is nothing stopping you claiming a private rent. Have you discussed this plan with your "ex", does he agree with it? The mind boGgLeS.
D70How about no longer being masochistic?
How about remembering your divinity?
How about unabashedly bawling your eyes out?
How about not equating death with stopping?0
