Am I right in thinking that under next of kin and decisions made re funeral etc. children are equal as next of kin irrespective of age and sex

I don't think it's written down anywhere but whoever registered the death is often given priority by the funeral directors.

I can remember an unseemly mess here which involved the deceased's partner rushing to get the death registered before an estranged relative who turned up and dissed him on his death bed was able to do so and organise his funeral.
If you've have not made a mistake, you've made nothing
  • I name my daughter as next of kin - I'm divorced, so no husband, and my other two children have not reached the age of majority. Even though I am in good health, I have talked with my daughter about my wishes - donor if possible, 'green' coffin if not too expensive (cardboard box will do :)), cremation, hymns, etc. It was a bit weird, but at least when I die, my daughter knows what I want.

For medical purposes, this card would be useful - https://www.advicenow.org.uk/living-together/next-of-kin/

I'm sure it would be accepted if a person wrote and signed a letter nominating someone as NOK and gave them permission to arrange the funeral. This is particularly important if you are in a relationship but not married or in a civil partnership. Your blood relations will be NOK, not your partner.
