Cheap weekly parking in Cardiff

Am starting a new job soon Queen's Street / Newport Rd bit of town.

Don't pay for parking in current job but will have to in this one.

Anyone know how I can do this without spending more than I earn!!!!

(Especially as new job is more money - part of my get debt-free plan)

Thanks.

  • I would buy parking vouchers and then park in The Walk (off Richmond Road). I think one voucher buys you six hours of parking. There are a couple of spots in Richmond Road, near the Mansion House that are unrestricted but I would imagine they would be difficult to get.

You could always park near one of the valley lines stations and get a train in to Queen Street. I often go into town from Heath halt at weekends and it's quite cheap but I guess at peak periods it might be a bit pricey. If you time it correctly it's quicker, as you don't have to fight your way through so much traffic. Heath has the advantage of having two stations on different lines, so there are more trains to chose from on the way back. And it sounds like you're working virtually next door to Queen Street station.

Or you could just park for free a bit further out of town and walk the last mile or two perhaps. You might think that doing this would add twenty minutes to the last part of your journey to work (And the first part of your journey home). However, the last mile of your journey might take you ten minutes anyway by the time you've negotiated traffic and found parking. It depends on whether you would prefer to walk a bit or pay the parking fee I suppose.

There's some unrestricted parking off Mackintosh place, plenty of spaces too as it's quite well hidden :) There is also a side road with a few unrestricted spaces halfway up Richmond Road.

I'd second going by train - we live in Llandaff North and getting into town by car between 8-9 in the morning can take more than 30 mins, by train its, 4 mins to Cathays, 9 to QSt and 11 to Central ( or there abouts). Having said that no-one can say that the trains are always on time or that they have room on them.

If I HAD to drive into town I'd be in at the crack of dawn and use voucher parking - I loathe both getting up early and driving into town!!

Do you need the car for your job, or just to get you to work? Depending on how far you have to travel, the bus is good (especially for that end of town). The traffic is a little better with a bus, than using the car but it is cheaper, and better for the environment.

I don't have a car and have been using public transport for 16 years to get into and around Cardiff, so if you've got any questions give me a shout.

If you have to park there is some (not much) free parking on Richmond Road itself although it's a 10-15 minute walk into town from there, depending on how far up the road you are and how quickly you walk.

I hate buses too but if you can get a train to Queen Street staiton that's probably the easiest solution.
