My windows 98 saga now ended

Options
I discovered, with a bit of lateral thinking that I did not have to actually install Windows 98, I just booted from the Windows 98 CD and didn't pick install Windows 98 just install the CD drivers.

And low and behold I got a DOS prompt. So I can run my program from a USB drive, as of course MSDOS does not recognise NTFS formatted drives.

I have now got a bootable USB drive with my program on it so I just boot from the USB drive when I need my program

Just can't print the screen but I photograph it instead.

I also thought I would try VirtualBox but on trying to install Windows 98 it grinds to a halt with the following error message

Standard Mode: Fault outside of MS-DOS Extender.
EC=0000 CS=0807 IP=0BE5 AX=4591 BX=15D6 CX=4501 DX=0A67
SI=15D6 DI=000D BP=14A2 DS=085F ES=0B47 SS=085F SP=1480

So VirtualBox isn't suitable.

    that error is an easy fix!! ^_^

    in virtual box you have settings for the virtual machine for what virtual disk to use and how much ram to give it and other odds and ends.

    Give it less ram (by default it's at 68MB) lower it to 32MB and also unchecked "Enable VT-x/AMD-V", and "Enable PAE/NX"

    Now the install should run fine ^_^

    The problem that the original windows 98 installer sometimes bottles it when it sees over 32MB of ram! dropping the ram available fixes this

    What is that in reference to?
  • I finally, after a few hours of installing Windows 98 in VirtualBox, (why did it take twice as long to install it, nearly 2 hours ) got Windows 98 to run in VirtualBox, and although it runs, it is exceedingly slow.

    Though I am surprised I can surf the internet from it.

    All this for an old Sinclair Spectrum BASIC program converted to run in MSDOS.

    It's a command prompt

    If you'd explained what you were trying to run, (I asked twice), other faster alternatives may have been possible. qbasic? compiled basic? Commercial program, or yours, called?

    Interesting, I also have Win98se running in Virtualbox.
    I have 128MB ram and never had a problem, 64 MB graphics, IIRC I had to enable 3D acceleration to get the graphics to work properly, think it only ran in 16 colours.
    But I may have got that last bit wrong! :o

    Also, whilst not lightning fast, it's definitely not slow. But it will depend on the spec of the host pc. 4GB 1066MHz ram and 2.95MHz dual core here. ;)
    Move along, nothing to see.
