  • In the hospital where I work if you are 17 and still in full time education you are classed as a child and can have parents stay overnight.

I got my appendix out at 14, classed as special needs (autism) and my parents weren't even allowed onto the ward to settle me in. Strictly visiting only.

Heart valve replacement at 16, no help from NHS, had to turn to RMHC for help.
Heart bypass at 17, no help.
Another heart bypass 6 months later no help.
Aortic dissection (descending type), open heart surgery needed, at 18, no help
Pacemaker at 21 (full time student, still autistic and kept awake and alert during the surgery), no help.
    Transplant at 25, no help.

Between 17 and 23 I lived 70 odd miles from home and was operated on 90 odd miles from my parents, nobody gave a monkeys because at 14 you're expected to cope day to day on a ward.

    Hi I hope this helps
the accommodation for parents needing to stay with children inpatients at the LGI is located at Eckersley house ( link below) which is run by the sick childrens trust

I believe that this available for parents of 18year olds and under- but if you phone them they will be able to tell you. You can't book accommodation, but I have never ever had any difficulty in having a room when my son has been an inpatient

    hope this helps
