Hi everyone,
My girlfriend has purchased a car from ebay which we are collecting tomorrow.
It has the log book present and 11 months MOT.
We will arrive with a cover note and therefore be able to Tax the car in the local post office before driving it home(its a long drive and not worth the risk). We realise that buying it tomorrow(30th),we will lose a months tax,but we are now wondering, that what is the scenerio if its not had tax for say 3 months........would be be liable to pay any backdated tax that is due as i'm sure the vehicle is not sorn.
Thanks in advance.

You should be able to buy it to start in December.
Still perhaps not strictly legal, but at least you'll have the disk in the window,
"When to apply
If your tax is due to run out at the end of the month, you can renew it from the fifth day of the month.
If your vehicle has been untaxed, because you’ve just bought it, the tax disc has run out or a SORN is in force, you can tax from the first day of the month in which you apply.
If you want the tax disc to start on the first day of the next calendar month, you cannot tax your vehicle more than two days in advance."

Yep. What mikey said. Within a couple of days of the month-end you can tax from 1st of following month. It's working days too, very useful at weekends.
Back of a V10;-If you apply in the last two working days of a month, the tax disc can start on the first day of the next monthI am a mortgage broker. How come it hasn't got a tax disc on it now? is it on SORN?, because if it isn't currently taxed, then it should be on SORN. Is the present keeper going to 'cash' the tax disc in? might be worth offering them a few quid for the remainder of the tax disc if that is the case.:TProud to have lived within my means all my life :T0
